About Jim Doran

After Studying many different styles during his formative years, Jim Doran turned professional in 1988, that same year he was highly commended for an oil portrait.  Feeling the need to move out of his studio, he started a series of watercolour works based on city life.  During the next five years Jim developed a less structured form of drawing and through experimentation with colour, a more expressive colour range.

Jim’s more recent work incorporates richer colours and an abstract element.  He is now more moved by what he feels rather than what he sees.

Since 1988 he has had several exhibitions of his work, including with the Federation of Northern Arts (where he began his artistic work) and the with Gateshead artists (where he won a special merit award).  Having now moved to Torbay, he has had exhibitions at the Plains, D’Art and Appledore Galleries.  In 2001 he started teacher training, specialising in Art History and practice.

Jim recently said:

“My work as an artist has taken me through many phases and has sent me on many journeys and adventures. Whithin the UK I have worked as far north as Scotland and as far south as Cornwall.

“I have had the pleasure of working in some of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring places in the UK, including The Lake District, Dartmoor National Park, The Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland’s beautiful and rugged countryside.

“My work has also travelled the world and has been exhibited as far as Australia, Canada and the USA. Art has made me both a student and teacher and has expanded my mind whilst enriching my life.”
