Romanticism

Man has always had an affinity with land, landscape, nature and the natural.

Throughout history, this bond has been re-affirmed and strengthened. As mankind has searched for a better understanding of himself and his condition, certain key events have questioned his humanity.

The industrial revolution was one such period. With the industrial revolution came an unprecedented expansion of science and technology and it saw the rise of Blake’s ‘Dark Satanic Mills.’

Once again, man turned to nature, perhaps to seek balance, but almost certainly to seek escape.

While science and technology marched ever onward, bringing with it irreversible changes, philosophers, poets, painters and composers romanticised about nature and the natural. Among these romantics were Beethoven, Byron, Shelly and one of the greatest painters of all time, Turner. His work is so beautifully evocative and invites us to engage with our own imagination.

Jim has produced a series of paintings based around his ideas of romanticism. This first one takes its inspiration from the waves crashing on to a beach.
